The Gun Club

(Los Angeles April 1980 - December 1995)

Chronology (I)

The Gun Club circa 1981
(l-r) Terry Graham, Jeffrey Lee Pierce, Ward Dotson and Rob Ritter.

Chronology: a chronological overview of known concert dates (some with setlists and/or ads),
dates of studio recordings, all line-ups and other trivia related to the American band The Gun Club.

-Information in grey italics is uncertain-

Listen to Kid Congo's oral history of the Gun Club @ Newyorknighttrain whilst reading this chronology.

1978

Los Angeles 1978. Jeffrey forms his first band The Red Lights (later renamed to The E-Types), a power pop group with Anna Statman (later A&R for Slash records and Interscope) on bass. They play at the Whisky a Go Go once (Theresa K took pictures, now lost). An unreleased demo of the group survives. "Debby By The Christmas Tree" is one of their songs. "Jungle Book" another. Jeffrey meets Brian Tristan (later a.k.a. Kid Congo Powers) from being in the early LA punk scene and going to lots of concerts (a.o. Television at the Roxy in June 1978 and Pere Ubu at the Whisky in August 1979).

1979
The year in which The Cyclones and Creeping Ritual are founded, precursors to The Gun Club.

The Cyclones line-up (Los Angeles: 1979 - late 1979):
Jeffrey Lee Pierce (guitar/vocals)/ Brian Tristan (guitar)/ Johnny Nation (bass) and Brad Dunning (drums).

In 1979 Jeffrey Lee Pierce together with Brian Tristan, Johnny Nation (later in Lydia Lunch's 13.13) and Brad Dunning form the rockabilly band The Cyclones. They rehearse a few times. Jeffrey asks Pleasant Gehman to sing live at their only show as support for The Go-Go's @ Gazzarri's, Los Angeles on 18-Sep-79. This concerts ends with Jeffrey and Johnny having a fist-fight on stage. Both were really drunk.

By late 1979 they are renamed Creeping Ritual replacing Johnny with Don Snowden, a music critic from The L.A. Times. They will only play a few live shows.

Late 1982/early 1983 Terry Graham and Ward Dotson leave the band. Ward goes on to form The Pontiac Brothers and later The Liquor Giants. Dee Pop leaves the Bush Tetras and joins the temporary band the Mysterious Trees with the line-up: Texacala -Linda- Jones (vocals)/Jeffrey Lee Pierce (vcls/guitar)/Jimmy Joe Uliana (a friend of Dee Pop) (bass) and Dee Pop (drums). They play several shows in New York City (CBGB's and Peppermint Lounge). Jim Duckworth [Panther Burns/Alex Chilton band] from Memphis and Dee Pop [Bush Tetras] join the Gun Club in January 1983. Patricia Morrison does not participate to the "Death Party" EP recording sessions due to logistical reasons (i.e. she was in Los Angeles).

1983
The year in which Jim Duckworth and Dee Pop join in January. Recording and release of the "Death Party" EP. Second tour of Europe and first and only Australian tour. In August Dee Pop leaves and Terry Graham returns on drums, he skips the Australian tour and returns in November. Jim Duckworth leaves for good at the start of the Australian tour.

Line-up #3A (New York: January 1983 - February 1983):
Jeffrey Lee Pierce (vocals)/Jim Duckworth (guitar)/Jimmy Joe Uliana (bass) and Dee Pop (drums).

January/February 1983
US NY,New York City,Blank Tapes studios 21st street, recording sessions (5 days) for the "Death Party" 7"/12" EP. Engineered by Joe Arlotta. 'Produced' by Chris Stein. Initially intended as a Tex & The Horseheads session. Songs written and recorded: The House On Highland Ave/ The Lie (initially titled "So Why")/ The Light Of The World/ Death Party/ Come Back Jim. Guest: Texacala -Linda- Jones (of Tex & The Horseheads).

Line-up #3B (New York: February 1983 - August 1983):
Jeffrey Lee Pierce (vocals)/Jim Duckworth (guitar)/Patricia Morrison (bass) and Dee Pop (drums).

According to Dee Pop the band rehearsed one day (for 3 hours), then did a 5 day tour of the East coast, had 2 days off, then went off to Europe for 2 months playing on rented equipment. Dee Pop played the East Coast tour with a broken hand and then left for the European tour, still with a broken hand!

December 1984. The band breaks up. Then it seemed like it was for good. Jeffrey Lee and Romi take some holidays in Egypt before returning to London.

Kid and Patricia remain in London were they briefly team up with The Legendary Stardust Cowboy for 3 London shows in December 1984 and a handful in the Netherlands in April 1985. They are billed as the "Legendary Stardust Cowboy and the Gun Glub". Then both start Fur Bible with Murray Mitchell on guitar and Desi Desperate on drums. They record their only release "Plunder The Tombs" 12" in London with Jim G.Thirlwell. This is followed by a 2 month UK tour as support for Siouxsie & The Banshees during October/November 1985. They continue to perform live, mainly in the Netherlands and the UK, until Spring 1986.

In December 1985 the Gun Club's "Danse Kalinda Boom" live album is released in the Netherlands.

After Fur Bible folds Kid joins the Bad Seeds in Berlin and Patricia joins The Sisters of Mercy.

In the meantime Jeffrey founds the Jeffrey Lee Pierce Quartet with whom he records and tours for the whole of 1985. By March 1986 Jeff and Romi move to Tokyo, Japan. They return to London in August. In September/October 1986 Jeffrey joins (ex- Barracudas) Jeremy Gluck for the recording of his "I Knew Buffalo Bill" album. See part III of the chronology for more details on the Jeffrey Lee Pierce Quartet.
