Review: Review taken from Melody Maker 15-Oct-88.

Late 1988
UK London, studio. Recording sessions for an EP. Four tracks are recorded: "Up On The Roof", "Hyperspace" (early version) and two more. Produced by Tony Cohen. Epic deliberately fucked it up because he didn't like the songs, so they ended up with basically unuseable tracks. This sowed the seeds of dissent between Rowland and Epic, although he would still join for the "I'm Never Gonna Die Again" album, but not the subsequent tour. "Up On The Roof" eventually ended up on the "King Of Kalifornia" single (October 1992).

"...not long after the first album we went into the studio to do another album, and it was a complete disaster. And I found out halfway through recording the record that Epic didn't like any of the songs, but rather than telling anybody he thought if he played really badly we'd never release them. So we ended up going to the studio and spending a lot of money and not having anything releasable. Mute [Records] lost a lot of faith in us, and it took a long time till they paid for us to go back into the studio, it really sort of killed the momentum that we had. It was just very strange." Rowland S.Howard interviewed by Jack Sargeant for BB Gun Magazine #6, 2003.

"Halfway through a recording it became obvious that Epic, our drummer, didn't like any of the songs, and was playing as badly as he possible could. Mute had spent GBP500 on this recording and from there it ended up taking three to four years to get their confidence back in that band to release another album. Consequently, it ended up being seven years [sic, 5 in fact] in between the 2 albums that we released". Rowland S. Howard in "Blunt, A biased history of Australian rock" book (Prowling Tiger press 2001).

1989-1991
The years in which they return to Melbourne (1989), do a few gigs as These Immortal Souls, Rowland teams up with Hugo Race [True Spirit] for a couple of concerts and both Rowland and Hugo star in John Tatoulis' "In Too Deep" film, then they get back to London (1990) for a handful of live gigs (with Sonic Youth), and finally the band is put on hold when Rowland with brother Harry join Lydia Lunch's Shotgun Wedding project (1991) in Memphis, USA.
