The Gun Club
-Chronology (I)-

Los Angeles-San Fernando Valley 1972-1976. Jeff attends Granada Hills High School. At the time he really loves (Peter Gabriel-era) Genesis, Sparks, Roxy Music and David Bowie, until in summer '77 he discovers and becomes obsessed with reggae artist Bob Marley. While at Granada Hills, Jeff has several party bands with Steven Wolfe. Those 'bands' were mostly abortive, messing-around-in-the-living-room things, planning and practicing. Most were prog rock/Beatles like.

Los Angeles early 1978. Jeffrey forms his first band The Red Lights, a power pop group with Anna Statman (later A&R for Slash records, Interscope and Geffen records).

"By mid 1978 I'd known Back Door Man's [fanzine] Phast Phreddie [Patterson] for a couple of years, but only now started hanging out with him regularly. He knew this guy named Jeff Pierce, who had had a band called the Redlights, and at some point played me the Redlights' "Jungle Book". I was floored, and said "I gotta meet the guy that wrote this!" I did, and from late '78 through early '80 the three of us were inseparable drinking buddies."

"Jun 28, 1979 [The Last are playing Gazzari's on a Thursday night in front of 60 people]: 2nd set was pretty cool, and encore #1 is now history. We started into "Pushin' Too Hard" [The Seeds], bringing it down as Jeff Pierce hit the stage to go into a long fake James Brown-live-record type intro. Then Phreddie hit the stage & the joint went nuts. Everybody danced, people pogoed & twisted side by side. They did the whole crowd tease thing at the end, Jeff cajoling Phred to come back out, etc ... Lots of girls with stars in their eyes. Bill Gazarri had an orgasm. Randall had an orgasm. Mike & David [my brothers] had to clean up the dressing room. Jeff Pierce wrote me out the lyrics to "Jungle Book". He doesn't want to do it so I said "fuck it, the Last will do it."

Jul 12, 1979: Evidently Vitus [Mataré] was pissed 'cause I'd planned to put "Jungle Book" on the [Last's] 2nd album ["Look Again", as yet unreleased]. He [didn't want] to tell me, so he told [producer/band manager] Randall [Wixen]. Randall then called me & said that if we put it on the album, or I played in Jeff's band, I would probably make an enemy out of every Last member. I was pissed, but reluctantly agreed to cool it, Redlights-wise. Anyway, we proceeded to play "Jungle Book" throughout the fall of 1979, frequently with Jeff himself singing it. It was a hit, and the band finally relented, and we did indeed (obviously) record it for the ["Look Again"] album. Jeff's original is, of course, better." As told by Joe Nolte [The Last].

Much later, "Jungle Book" is recorded by The Amber Lights (Mick Harvey & JP Shilo) and also Tav Falco's Panther Burns for the "Journey Is Long" (Jeffrey Lee Pierce Sessions Project) album (2012). The Amber Lights record "Kitty Ina Moonlight" and "Kisses for my President" (with Debbie Harry) and also Andrea Schroeder records "Kisses for my President", all for the "Axels & Sockets" (Jeffrey Lee Pierce Sessions Project) album (2014). At the same sessions "Kisses for my President" is recorded by Cypress Grove (vocals/guitar)/ Mick Cozens (guitar)/ Mark Tomeo (pedal steel guitar) and Willie Love (drums,percussion), but this track remains unreleased.

On August 14, 2020 Spacecase Records/In The Red Records jointly released an EP "Red Lights" containing the above 5 demos, supplied by the Pierce estate.

Note: Jeffrey stays with his high school friend Steven Tash for about 5-6 months, checking out the CBGB scene and Blondie concerts. Steven gets Jeff a writing gig @ "Record Review" magazine, for which Jeff reviews records by the Alex Harvey Band, Blondie, The Stooges and writes articles about Punk rock and monster movies, etc..

New Jersey, Hoboken 1979. Jeffrey joins Glenn Morrow's band The Individuals (with Richard Barrone, Rob Norris and Peter Holsapple). They rehearse a lot @ the newly opened (in August, 1978) Maxwell's club.

By June 1979, Jeff returns to Los Angeles and starts writing for Slash magazine, something he will be doing until July 1980.

Note:"The germ for the band began in my living room when I was living on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood in 1979. Jeffrey Lee Pierce would come over quite a bit and we would drink beer and play old 78 RPM jump blues records by Wynonie Harris and Amos Milburn which we found in the thrift stores of South Central Los Angeles. Jeffrey thought it would be a good idea to start an R&B combo to perform jump blues, since no one else was. He had just broken up his band, The Red Lights, and was restless. We got a couple of our drinking buddies together and went to Jeffrey's mother's house in the San Fernando Valley. There, his sister Jacqui had a boyfriend who kept a set of drums in the garage. The bass player was our friend from Cleveland, Rodney Burns. The guitarist was Joe Nolte of the Last. Jeffrey played the drums. We learned Roy Head's "Treat Her Right" and played it for our friend Pleasant Gehman over the phone. That was as far as that version of the band got." Phast Phreddie 2019.

US CA,Los Angeles-North Hollywood, Mars rehearsal studios (@ 665 North Berendo Street): the band are trying to record a single with own songs: "Faster Than You", "What A Friend I Have In Whiskey" and "When I Get My Cadillac". All three jointly written by Patterson and Pierce.

Note 1: "Then we decided to see how serious we could get. Jeffrey and I wrote three songs together: two rockers, "Faster Than You" and "What A Friend I Have In Whiskey." and a sort of junked-out ballad called "When I Get My Cadillac." Jeffrey moved to guitar, we enlisted our friend Don Snowden, a music writer for the L.A. Times, to play bass, and we went through several drummers—including Brendan Mullen, who used to book the punk club the Masque: Robert Newman, who was in the original Motels: KK Barrett, who was in the Screamers: and Robert Bryan, who lived in my building and was in the Silencers. Of all of them, Robert Bryan rehearsed with us the most, but he was never a permanent member.

Though very raw, "What a Friend I Have in Whiskey" is an early attempt at a jump blues sound for the modern world. This is the fourth take of the song. The vocal is way low because the studio's P.A. system was not great. Also, you can hear the space we saved for the saxophone player we were hoping to get. Anyway, the great thing about this is Jeffrey's guitar playing; it is downright wild--the saving grace of the recording. If it weren't for him, the band wouldn't have existed." Phast Phreddie 2019.

Note 2: The single never materialised then, but "What A Friend I Have In Whiskey" was released on a 7" single by Spacecase Records in 2019. Their third song, "When I Get My Cadillac" is later covered by Lydia Lunch/ Kid Congo Powers and Cypress Grove for "We Are Only Riders" - The Jeffrey Lee Pierce Sessions Project (2009) and again by Cypress Grove for "Axels & Sockets" - The Jeffrey Lee Pierce Sessions Project (2014).

Thee Precisions went through several line-up changes before playing their last show on 26-Dec-85 @ the Club Lingerie.

Note: Jeffrey and Brian Tristan [later a.k.a. Kid Congo Powers] meet standing in line to get into a Pere Ubu show. "One balmy evening at the beginning of August 1979, I was standing in line outside the Whisky a Go Go to get into a Pere Ubu show. [...] I spotted somebody moving toward me out of the corner of my eye. I looked up slowly, not really wanting to engage with anyone at all, and saw this truly eccentric-looking individual standing directly in front of me.[...] He wore an oversized Debbie Harry badge on a white vinyl trench coat belted tight at the waist. He had ribbons and bows tied into his hair, and black-and-white saddle oxfords on his feet. [...] “Hi, I’m Jeff,” he said.[...] I’d seen him before, browsing through the racks of reggae imports at Bomp!, the record store gig I’d landed [...] Apropos of nothing and entirely out of the blue, he said, “You should be in a band with me.” [...] We went into the club. Pere Ubu blew our minds to smithereens. My brain was whirling with all the possibilities open to me, having taken the decision to form a band with my new friend. [...] the way it had been proposed, so matter-of-factly, and Jeffrey’s confidence in me, even though we were total strangers, made it seem entirely possible." from "Some New Kind of Kick: A Memoir", book by Kid Congo Powers (2022).

Jeffrey Lee Pierce together with Johnny Nation [from The Bags, later in Lydia Lunch's 13.13] , Jon Oliphant (who owned an upright bass) and Brad Dunning form the rockabilly band The Cyclones. They rehearse a few times at Jeffrey's mom's house in Pacoima and perform live only once. Pleasant Gehman joins Jeff in writing songs for the band.

Note: For this show, Jeffrey made Pleasant Gehman [Screamin' Sirens] the singer and Brian Tristan acts as 'manager'. This gig was to be The Cyclones first and only show. The concert ends with Jeffrey and Johnny having a fist-fight on stage, with Brad joining in. Then Jeff kicked over the drums, threw the mike stand and walked off. All were really drunk. Black Flag was there and they asked The Cyclones to open for them... but they never played again!

The Cyclones are renamed Creeping Ritual, replacing Johnny Nation with Brian Tristan (later a.k.a. Kid Congo Powers) and Jon Oliphant with Don Snowden [Thee Precisions], then also a music critic for the L.A. Times. During this period Jeffrey writes most songs that would end up on the Gun Club's debut album " Fire Of Love".

Creeping Ritual rehearses most of the songs which, in May 1981, would be recorded on the Gun Club's debut album "Fire Of Love".

Note:"We booked some time at a studio on Selma Avenue and McCadden in Hollywood that a lot of the other punk bands were using as a rehearsal space. It was close by my current job, at Peaches Records on Hollywood Boulevard. [...] Those first rehearsals brought a new meaning to the phrase "working it out." We started by tackling covers, like Bo Diddley's "Gunslinger" and Burning Spear's version of "People Get Ready". [...] We also worked up a very no-wave "Slipping Into Darkness" by War. We played around with a folk song recorded by Mack Self called "Willie Brown" [...] [Jeffrey] had some original songs already written. There was "Body and Soul", a sort of Mink DeVille slinky number; a song Jeffrey asked me to write lyrics to called "Going Down to the Red River" (which later became known as "Devil in the Woods"); and "Black Train" [...] We also attempted a ramshackle version of "Tombstone Blues" by Bob Dylan, which should have been left buried six feet under. Better was another traditional folk song, "Railroad Bill," we tackled at punk speed. [...] Then [Jeffrey] showed us this '60s garage-punk-type song he'd written called "Sex Beat." from "Some New Kind of Kick: A Memoir", book by Kid Congo Powers (2022).

Much later, "Body and Soul" is recorded by Congo Norvell for their "Abnormals Anonymous" album (1997), by Astro-Unicorn (Michelle and Kris Needs) for the "Journey Is Long" (Jeffrey Lee Pierce Sessions Project) album (2012) and again by James Johnston for the "Axels & Sockets" (Jeffrey Lee Pierce Sessions Project) album (2014).

Note 2: From an interview with Dave Alvin [The Blasters]: "I gave them their first gig", Dave Alvin laughs. Back then he played guitar and handled bookings for The Blasters. "I got us a Saturday night residency at [Chinatown punk club] the Hong Kong Café for a month or two, then I got this phone call from Jeffrey. He was trying to scam me -'that was Creeping Ritual's gig, there was a fuck-up'- even though they'd never played a gig. I enjoyed that he was so brazen, so I said, "You can open." So he got what he wanted, but had a very dramatic way of getting it - which was very Jeffrey."

The Blasters started their 6-weeks Saturday residence at the Hong Kong Cafe on 23-Feb-80 [LA Weekly 22-Feb-80], but only played two more shows on 08-Mar-80 [LA Weekly 07-Mar-80] and finally on 05-Apr-80 (LA Weekly 04-Apr-80)). It's at one of these dates [most probable 08-Mar-80] that Jeffrey scammed Dave Allen into letting Creeping Ritual support.

"We played the show, made it through. Nobody booed or ran away. Our friends liked it. Keith Morris was there. [Jeffrey and Keith] had become friends and roommates. Keith asked us to support his new band, Circle Jerks, the following month, also at the Hong Kong. We were becoming regulars!" from "Some New Kind of Kick: A Memoir", book by Kid Congo Powers (2022).

Note 3: The Hong Kong cafe (across the street from Madame Wong's) held its first rock concert on June 5th, 1979, headlined by Elton Duck. Its final show was held on New Years Eve 1980.

Note: The Bags include future Gun Club members Rob -Graves- Ritter, Terry Graham and Patricia Morrison (born Patricia Rainone). Some tension had been building up in The Bags after Patricia Rainone [later Morrison] disasterous performance in San Diego on March 15, 1980. Her last show with The Bags was @ the Hong Kong cafe in late March [with Monitor and The Urinals]. Patricia first joins Legal Weapon and later in June 1982, The Gun Club.

In April 1980, Creeping Ritual change their name to The Gun Club, upon suggestion of Keith Morris [Black Flag/Circle Jerks]. At the time Jeffrey was Keith's housemate @ his 'Pink House' on Simms Avenue South in Inglewood (CA). In return for the name the "Gun Club", Jeffrey gave Keith a song which became "Group Sex" for the Circle Jerks.

One of the last shows of The Bags."Jeffrey persuaded the Urinals, who he knew, to give up half of their 20 or 30 minute set, so we wound up doing a guerrilla-style, hit-and-run set of two or three songs. It was all a blur, set up, we probably did "Sex Beat" and "Heroin" for sure, maybe "Black Train", break down and get the fuck offstage. Note: Club 88 opened in July 1977 and active till early 1982. The owner of the club was Wayne Mayotte, a retired mechanical and structural engineer. Club 88 was a former strip club converted into a music club. Capacity of 250 and reportedly poor stage conditions.

Note: Final live show for The Bags and possible last live show for the Gun Club's line-up #1: Jeffrey Lee Pierce (vocals)/ Brian Tristan (guitar)/ Don Snowden (bass) and Brad Dunning (drums).

June 1980. The Bags were formed in August 1977 and played their first live show @ The Masque in Hollywood on September 10, 1977. The first line-up was: Alice Armendariz (vocals), Patricia Rainone [later Morrison] (bass), Janet Koontz (guitar), Geza -X- Gedeon (guitar) and Joe Nanini (drums). The Bags played their last show & the Hong Kong Cafe, Los Angeles on June 5, 1980. The final line-up was Alice Armendariz (vocals), Rob Ritter (bass), Craig Lee, (guitar) and Terry Graham (drums).

By June 1980 Brad Dunning and Don Snowden decide to leave the Gun Club, they both had proper jobs and needed to make money to survive. The rhythm section (Rob Ritter and Terry Graham) of the now defunct Bags offers to take their places. According to Terry (in an email reply to me) this happened after a show @ the "Hong Kong cafe when Gun Club opened for the Blasters" [17-May-80], according to Don Snowden one of his last shows was a third-on-the-bill at Club 88, with X and the Blasters [30-May-80], and according to other sources this happened at Hong Kong Cafe when Gun Club opened for the Bags [05-Jun-80].

Palm Springs resident, Brad Dunning later became an aclaimed architectural restorator and interior house designer.

Note 1: "An early gig at Club 88: Jeffrey dressed in a black suit with a white shirt and a black string tie and a black hat, looking like something out of a Flannery O'Connor short story. He had chains in one hand and an old Bible in the other as he sang "Preachin' Blues." At one point he threw the Bible down and jumped on it. The owner of Club 88 promptly banned the Gun Club from playing there ever again." Fred -Phast Phreddie- Patterson quoted in "We Got the Neutron Bomb", a book by Brendan Mullen.

Note 2: "We land our first show for the revamped, renewed and regurgitated Gun Club at Club 88. The stage is small and low, making it easy to see the big, white Bible Jeffrey hurls to his feet and slaps with five feet of chain he brought along for the purpose. [...] All is well [...] until we get to "For The Love of Ivy." Jeffrey slaps the Bible—preach it! "Gonna buy me a gun (slap!), as long as my arm (slap!), gonna kill everyone (slap! slap!), who ever done me harm (slap!)". But then, "I was huntin' for niggers down in the dark." [it] earned us a lifetime ban at Club 88. [...] One thing is for sure: Gun Club doesn't sound like any other band in town. [...] Our show at Club 88 confirms our status as the only blues band that plays punk and the only punk band that plays blues." from "Punk Like Me!", a book by Terry Graham. By December the Gun Club is playing Club 88 again.

Madame Wong's West opened as an off-shoot of the popular Madame Wong in Chinatown, but lasted significantly longer than its parent venue (which closed in 1985), hosting a wide variety of bands from 1979-1991. The clubs were run by Esther Wong, the "godmother of LA punk", who died on August 15, 2005 at the age of 85.

The Cramps had moved from New York City to Los Angeles in September, after losing their apartment for not extending the lease while on tour. They are looking for a final replacement for Bryan Gregory (who left and was replaced for a few months by Julian Griensnatch, aka Julien Hechtlinger, from July till September 1980). After attending a Gun Club show [according to Fred "Phast Phreddie" Patterson the Cramps approached Brian after a show at Madam Wong's, according to others it was after a show at the Culver Arena bar], Ivy from the Cramps calls Brian to offer him the job as their guitar player.

Article: "In their search for a new guitar player, the Cramps, after extensive auditions, have chosen Brian "Kid Congo" Tristan from the Gun Club to fill the slot. The Gun Club will he playing the Arena on October 18 with the Blasters and the Textones. The Gun Club, by the way, are of course in need of a new guitar player. They're looking for someone who, preferably, knows how to play rockabilly. If anyone out there is interested, contact Jeffrey Pierce at (213) 996-6951." from Pleasant Gehman's "L.A. Note: Brian had met Lux and Ivy in New York when he was 19 years old and visiting New York in April and November 1978, with Pleasant Gehman and staying with Kristian Hoffman and Bradly Field @ 240 Grand street and later at The Teenage Jesus and the Jerks loft @ 43-45 Delancey street. Brian discusses the offer with Jeffrey who supports him in joining The Cramps. Brian Tristan leaves the Gun Club early November and changes his name to Kid Congo Powers. His first show with The Cramps would be @ the Ritz on the 08-Dec-80 (the night John Lennon was assassinated) in New York City, followed by a London show @ the Lyceum on 14-Dec-80. He would leave The Cramps in September 1983 and return to The Gun Club.

We gave him a tape of earlier gigs from 1980 and asked him to tune to open E, like Kid Congo, and play some slide on the solos. Rob, Terry and I already knew most of the songs and we soon did our first [sic] reformed gig at the Country Club in Reseda, opening for X in front of about a thousand people. It must have seemed as unreal to Ward as it did to me, neither of us having played to an audience that large. I was a bit afraid, since the only other large audience I had sung for was during the filming of [Penelope Spheeris'] "The Decline Of Western Civilization" at the Fleetwood in Redondo Beach [on 10-May-80], where we were booed and spat on." Note 2: The Country Club was opened in March 1980 by Chuck Landis (The Roxy club). Across the street from Bebop Records store. " [..] concert promoter Jim Rissmiller takes over operation of the 1,000-seat facility, which was opened early this year [1980] by Chuck Landis, in a long-term lease agreement. The arrangement is significant because it enables Rissmiller to work with bands that have graduated from the regular club circuit, but aren't ready yet for the 3,000-seat Santa Monica Civic level. Jeff pulled down pieces of the decorations as he slammed around, muttering such quotable quotes as "Peace and eternal love — just don't try to steal my drink, you motherfucker!" Keith Morris of the legendary Circel Jerks joined the Club onstage for a rousing rendition of "Group Sex."

Note: Cathay De Grande (originally a Chinese restaurant), after the closure of several other punk rock venues, became in the fall of 1980, "the last haunt in Hollywood" for punk music, before it also closed on October 31, 1984, after a series of disputes with local authorities that centered upon concerns surrounding excessive noise and local crime.

Recorded by Vitus Mataré [from The Last] with a Dokorder 7140 4-track reel-to-reel home recording machine. "Devil In The Woods" ended up on the "Keats Rides A Harley" compilation LP album (September 1981).

All tracks later released on the "Early Warning" 2CD compilation (SFTRI 1997) and "Da Blood Done Signed My Name" 2CD compilation (Castle 2007). All but "Fire Of Love" also available on the "Sex Beat 81", semi legitimate LP album (Lolita Records, France) and the "Death Party", semi legitimate CD (Revenge, France). All 5 tracks available on the "Elvis From Hell" bootleg LP (Rancid Records, UK). All 5 tracks released as bonus tracks on re-release of the "Fire Of Love" album (Blixa Sounds, US 2021).

"Vitus [Mataré] showed up at the end of practice with a four-track reel to reel and we recorded four or five songs in an hour, right there in this shitty little rehearsal space. I always thought that was the best representation of the band. Simple, live, with no pretense. It was always a blast playing with the best rhythm section in LA (Rob and Terry). Article: Scan of Pleasant Gehman's column "L.A. Dee Da - On The Streets" from LA Weekly 08-May-81. "Saturday was Surf Day at Disneyland with the Ventures, Jan and Dean, and the Surfaris playing. Amongst those who trekked to Anaheirn were the staff of Flipside fanzine and members of 45 Grave, the Gun Club, the Boneheads and other punkeroos. But even though head cheese Kid Congo got in, fellow Cramps Ivy and Lux were denied admission as were several other new youth. Once again, the dread Disney dress code was being used to discriminate against those people who might tend to think and dress for themselves. Ironically, the last people to have major problems with Disney fashion do's and don'ts were those considered the antithesis of the new movement: hippies. Times change and remain the same, don't they?"

US Release of the V/A "Keats Rides A Harley" album (Happy Squid Records).

Note: Various Artists compilation containing the Gun Club's "Devil In The Woods", recorded by Vitus Mataré [from The Last] in April 1981. Happy Squid Records was formed by the Urinals in 1978 in order to release their recordings. One of their songs, "Black Hole", would in 1991 be covered by the Gun Club for the "Divinity" album. The Urinals changed their name to the 100 Flowers in 1981.

Article: "The night before Halloween was equally wild. The Gun Club (who seem to have two bass players at the moment) played a wild party at the Otis Art Institute, exhibiting the more maniacal side of rock 'n' roll as art. Their set began at midnight, with a rousing version of "Ya Keep A-Knockin" (which was no rousing they played it two more times during the course of the evening). During the second song, an overly crazed Jeffrey Lea Pierce crawled under the stage and sang a few songs from down there, screaming in a muffled voice. "I'm not coming out, you'll have to drag me out!" Finally someone did. The set progressed, and the band ran through hit after hit, including a wild version of "Gloria," "Louie, Louie," the Cramps' "I Was a Teenage Werewolf"' with Levi Dexter [Rockats] on bass, a couple of Blondie songs with a member of the audience (male) sitting in for Deborah Harry and/or Jeffrey Lea Pierce, and a killer version of Billy Idol's "Dancing with Myself". Note 1: Broadcast by KUSF FM radio, except (*). Filmed by Joe Rees for Target Video. "Sex Beat" from this show was released on "V/A:Target Presents Hardcore Vol.3" VHS (Target 1985) and also on "V/A:Underground Forces Volume III" VHS (Target). They were supposed to do a more elaborate live set at the Target Video studios, in between shows, like some other bands did then. But couldn't, because Terry had injured his hand because Jeff had thrown a beer bottle that broke on the drums and cut Terry's hand.

At the time Kid Congo Powers was in The Cramps, having left The Gun Club in November 1980. Panther Burns has Jim Duckworth on guitar. Jim would join The Gun Club in January 1983.

Note 2: Billy Persons [The Falcons/Weirdos] replaces Rob Ritter on bass. Billy:"I replaced [Rob Ritter] in the fall of '81 for a bunch of shows in Los Angeles and three in the Bay Area including the On Broadway show with The Cramps and Panther Burns. The band wasn't doing much in the fall and winter of '81. I would have joined permanently but Ward [Dotson] and Terry [Graham] told me they were going to quit once the "Miami" album was done as they were on salary at the time so Rob was brought back for that album. I also worked with Jeffrey Lee Pierce around this time on what would later become Tex and The Horseheads. Also, I don't know if you are aware but Target Video taped our set and it may finally be released soon. I played with the Weirdos on their [March 1979 recorded] "Who, What, When, Where Why" EP. I also replaced Rob Ritter in Thelonious Monster in the early '90s for a while and was in The Joykiller in the mid-'90s (we did three albums for Epitaph). That [On Broadway show] was a really fun show although my memory of it is pretty foggy. Jeffrey and I spent the whole day drinking in a German restaurant in San Francisco so we were plastered at this show."

Note 3: The On Broadway theater, was upstairs at Mabuhay Gardens, located at 435 Broadway Street. It was constructed in 1919 as the Garibaldi Hall, renamed the Mabuhay Gardens in the 1970s. The Mabuhay Gardens nightclub started featuring rock shows around 1976 when Ness Aquino, the owner of the club, was approached by, rock promoter and television producer, Dirk Dirksen to promote punk rock shows at the Mabuhay. In 1983, Dirksen seemed to have enough and stopped promoting shows at the Mab and On Broadway. Ness Aquino tried to keep the shows going, but sometime in 1988 the club closed it's doors forever.

Rob was quite a sensitive person, kind of an odd character in his own right. And he said he just didn’t wanna deal with Jeffrey. But when I got in [the band] we played a few shows and it worked, and we said, ‘Rob, please, please play lead guitar.’ Just ‘cause we thought it would be really good. So he did one show. Note 1: Filmed for "New Wave Theatre", a television program hosted by Peter Ivers, broadcast locally in the Los Angeles area by KSCI on UHF channel 18. Broadcast on the east coast by USA Network cable on the "Night Flight" show. Re-broadcast in 1982 (during the French tour?) on French TF1 TV (Mégahertz program) with an additional interview with Jeffrey.

Peter Ivers wrote the song "In Heaven, Everything Is Fine" for David Lynch's 1976 film "Eraserhead". This track was used by Lydia Lunch as intro to her 13.13 live performances in 1981. On March 3, 1983, Peter Ivers was found bludgeoned to death in his apartment in a rundown neighborhood of Los Angeles at the age of 37. It was speculated that he may have been murdered by his NWT business partner. A superb biography and insight in the murder case has been written by Josh Frank.

Note 2: Oddly, the video shows Rob Ritter on bass instead of Patricia Morrison.

The Gun Club break up

Terry Graham and Ward Dotson leave the band. Terry replaces Nick Knox in the Cramps for one studio demo session (in Hollywood) late December 1982, followed by 2 US live dates (in Detroit 29-Dec/Chicago 31-Dec). Terry would only return to the Gun Club in September 1983. Ward goes on to form first The Phillips Blues Band (1983), then The Pontiac Brothers (1984-1991), later The Liquor Giants (1991-2000) and recently Golden Sombrero (2013).

Dee Pop had been kicked out of the Bush Tetras and joins the temporary band The Mysterious Trees with the line-up: Texacala -Linda- Jones (vocals)/Jeffrey Lee Pierce (vocals/guitar)/Jimmy Joe Uliana [a friend of Dee Pop] (bass) and Dee Pop (drums). They play several shows in New York City (CBGB's and Peppermint Lounge) during December 1982.

Jim Duckworth [Panther Burns/Alex Chilton band] from Memphis and Dee Pop (real name Dimitri Constantin Papadopoulos) from New York join a new line-up of the Gun Club in New York in January 1983. Patricia Morrison does not participate to the "Death Party" EP recording sessions due to logistical reasons (i.e. she was in Los Angeles).

Initially intended as a Tex & The Horseheads session. Songs written and recorded: The House On Highland Ave/ The Lie (initially titled "So Why")(*)/ The Light Of The World(*)/ Death Party/ Come Back Jim. Guest: Texacala -Linda- Jones (of Tex & The Horseheads). (*) these songs are also part of the Mysterious Trees' repertoire. According to Dee Pop the band rehearsed one day (for 3 hours), then did a 6-days tour of the East coast, had 2 days off, then went off to Europe for 2 months playing on rented equipment. Dee Pop played the East Coast tour with a broken hand and then left for the European tour, still with a broken hand!

Note 1: Before the show, Jeffrey Lee Pierce had met Zéro de conduite (a French punk group, all aged 11-13 years) at the train station, waiting for the promoter to pick him up. The kids had recorded a version of "Sex Beat" on a cassette tape, which they gave to Jeff. He liked it so much that the Gun Club let them do a 10 mins version in French of "Sex Beat" (using the Gun Club's equipment) just before they went on stage themselves. On stage, standing next to drummer Guilaume Ledoux were Bono and The Edge who were laughing and cheering. Dee, Jim and Patricia had to get the kids off stage because they had no idea how to end the song. After the Gun Club's set the stage and U2's equipment (which was already on stage) were left in a mess with beer cans and stuff.

Note 2: A recording of the Gun Club's show was broadcast on 27-Sep-83 by pirate radio station Radio Transis'Tours @ 93.6FM (from Tours). U2's show was broadcast on 26-Apr-83.

It turned out to be not much. Actually, many of the group's local fans may have been heartened by the lack of change in this performance. Gun Club's country-blues-meets-punk sound is as unstable a mix as ever. It's not hard to pinpoint the problem. [...] With his long, ratty bleached-blond hair, Pierce has always been more of a shamanic showman than a vocalist. But you'd think that he would have learned to sing more effectively by now. September 1983. The "Fire Of Love" album had been released in Australia on Big Time Records. On the verge of the Australian tour, at San Francisco airport, Jim Duckworth and Terry Graham leave the band. Jeffrey gets on his flight to Melbourne. Patricia Morrison takes hers (to Sydney) as well, but arrives a day later (in Melbourne). In the meantime Spencer P.Jones [later in Beasts of Bourbon] and Billy Pommer Jr., both of Australian band The Johnnys, are hired for the live band. Jeffrey calls Kid Congo, who by then had just left The Cramps, to re-join The Gun Club. Kid flies in from Los Angeles and arrives in Australia on 30-Sep-83. Back in the US, Terry Graham joins The Leaving Trains and records with them for their "Well Down Blue Highway" album.

Note: "Or the time, going to Australia, [Jeffrey] didn’t have a ride to bet to the airport so I gave him my ride. Consequently I was late getting there. And we had to take a connecting flight from L.A. to San Francisco, then on to Australia. We sorted that out, and I made sure we got dinner and everything. But our equipment was late because it had to come on a later flight. To make a long story short, Jeffrey, because I had taken care of him and he was on time, was able to go on the plane. The others, we were standing there waiting for our guitars to come out of the [baggage carousel]. Well, they were saying, ‘Your plane is leaving.’ And Jeffrey said, ‘Just leave ’em.’ I said, ‘What do you mean? We can’t just leave them!’ And he said, ‘I have to go. People are waiting to see me. I am an important man.’ So our equipment finally came out. The other two people in the band turned to me, which was Terry Graham and Jim Duckworth, I think it was, and said, ‘We’re not going, Patricia.’ And Jeffrey had already gone to Australia for the tour. This is actually the first time anyone has every heard this, because up until now we just pretended that it was an accident. But they planned it totally ahead of time, and said ‘We’re not going to go.’ So I said, ‘Well, I want to, because I’ve never been to Australia, so I’m going!’ So they said, ‘OK, fine,’ and hung around with me. Terry had a video camera, and we took videos of us talking about this. I got on the plane and I went. We stopped in Hawaii, and there was a message that came over the [speaker]. ‘Miss Morrison, please come to the thing, there is a message for you.’ And it was the [booking] agent saying, ‘Something weird’s happened here. Terry and Jim’s names aren’t down as on the plane. What’s happened?’ And I said, ‘They’re not coming.’ And the agent… he just couldn’t get it through his head. He was like, ‘What are we going to do?’ I said, ‘I don’t know, but I am going to Australia.’ Hahaha! So I went. And there was a band called The Johnnys in Australia. We picked up the guitarist, Spencer P. Jones, and Billy [Pommer], their drummer. We had one soundcheck/rehearsal, totally jetlagged, and played the shows. I mean, that is what [Jeffrey] could drive you to. It’s hard to explain unless you’ve put up with it, but I’ve seen him get people to tears." Patricia interviewed for Stomp and Stammer,2001.

We decided to turn it on during "Cool Drink of Water," [...] The machine was turned on. Smoke poured out, and poured and poured, until it was so thick, we could barely see each other, let alone the audience. Lost in a haze, we turned the song into a psychedelic drone, driving it up and up in volume and intensity. After about ten minutes, we stopped. The air around us began to clear. Note: Whispers was opened in 1979 as Brisbane’s premier entertainment centre, spread over three levels, it had a capacity of 1,000 people. The owners used the lighting designer from New York's famous Studio 54 spending over half a million (Australian) dollars on lighting alone. Whispers also had valet parking, cigarette girls, drink waiters and an a-la-carte restaurant.

Article: Recollections by Edwin Garland, taken from I-94 Bar. "It was a show full of passion and commitment. We were all crammed into a space designed for 100 people. There were maybe twice of many of us squeezed in that tiny room. At one point I was pushed over and landed in Billy’s drum kit… as the band played on."

Note 1: Because of the high tour expenses, Rob Furst (Australian promoter) had no money left to give to the band, thus increasing the tensions between him and the band. To pay for their return flight to the US, Stuart Coupe (tour publicist) and Roger Grierson (The Johnnys’ manager) organised this mystery show. This was to be the last show of the tour. They did a crazy set and many of the audience ended up on stage.

Note 2: "After the Strawberry Hill show, Jeffrey and Patricia flew straight back home. I stayed on at Spencer's place in Sydney for a few days waiting for my flight. He was just about to start recording an album with his new band, a supergroup of Johnnys, Scientists, and Hoodoo Gurus called "Beasts of Bourbon", who had taken their name from the headline of an article about the Gun Club. Spencer introduced me to their singer, a charismatic and striking-looking nineteen-year-old kid named Tex Deadly [Perkins]. [...] They wanted me to record with them, but, unfortunately, my flight left before we could get into the studio." from "Some New Kind of Kick: A Memoir", book by Kid Congo Powers (2022). Years later (summer 1985) in London, Kid tried to form a new band, Fur Bible, with Tex Perkins as vocalist, but that did not work out. In February 1988, whilst recording the "Tender Prey" album in Melbourne and touring with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Tex formed "The Butcher Shop" (with Spencer and Billy from the Johnnys), recording the "Hard For You" EP with Kid joining on guitar.

Note 1: Expat UK punk Billy Idol [Generation X] visits often and invites the band to open for him at the 12,000-seater Long Beach,Arena. In 1982, Michael Jackson recorded part of his "Thriller" album at this studio. Gladys Knight and the Pips ('83) and Donna Summer ('84) also recorded here. The Doors were remastering their "Waiting For The Sun" album for CD while the Gun Club were recording. These days it's the location of EastWest Studios.

Note 2: "It was very quick. Two weeks. The only thing I would say is that, before we went in to [record it], we had been playing the songs on tour, so… we knew what we were doing and everything. But we went to do a few rehearsals, and [Jeffrey] had a bit of an ego trip and he decided to change all the bass parts at the last minute. And he changed them to weird things. But the producer (Jeff Eyrich), who came to rehearsal, said, ‘Great, but what’s happened to the bass parts?’ And, you know, Jeffrey tried to pretend like he wasn’t listening, and I said, ‘Well, Jeffrey changed ‘em all.’ He said, ‘Well, change ‘em back, for God’s sake!’ Hahaha! So he put ‘em all back. I don’t know, it was just sort of an ego thing. I have no idea. But we went in and we did everything in one or two takes on that album. And it was a bit hard sometimes with Jeffrey’s voice, because he wasn’t always in key, but it worked. It was fine that he wasn’t. A lot of people aren’t. But why don’t we do backing vocals on it. We had Andy Williams, you know, his [nephews, Andrew and David], the Williams Brothers, they sang on 'Las Vegas Story', and we had to find the pitch to make it work on ‘My Man’s Gone Now’ and everything. But it works. That sort of thing never bothered me. But it was very quick and very easy." Patricia interviewed for Stomp and Stammer,2001.

Note 3: "It was a big studio, but we had the cheaper "off hours" time, so we'd go in at like midnight until six in the morning and record. The good thing though was that Ry Cooder was recording the "Paris, Texas" soundtrack in the same studio during the day and he had all these vintage amps there and all these crazy noisemaker things. So we poked around his stuff and used some percussion. Also, Stevie Nicks [Fleetwood Mac] was recording in the next studio and she was the one that didn't come in until three in the morning. And this big white limousine would roll up and like eighteen people would fall out and immediately go into the bathrooms and block the doors - both the men's and the women's." Note 2: "The thing is, we were all imbibing that evening –everybody in the band, as well as I— and none of us were too intoxicated to function. Jeffrey got there late and he was three sheets to the wind, but he was in fine form and he felt comfortable around all of us, ’cause we were all friends and we got him. We got his sense of humor and he was in a good mood. [...] Jeffrey’s sense of humor was truly contagious. And you know, we all continued to drink as the night went on. It’s my recollection that we started with the Willie Nelson song ["Not Supposed to Be That Way"] because that was a song that he was ostensibly contributing to the country-punk compilation. We did two takes on that [...] and then we did "Walking Down the Street Doin’ My Thing", which he taught to the guys in the studio. The song was mostly performed on the spot in the studio. Improvisation in the songs, as you’ll hear, is high. To my knowledge, he hadn’t shown those guys the music or the song before coming in there. I don’t remember if he had the lyrics written out or if he just remembered them extemporaneously. As you [hear] in the two Willie Nelson versions, he started improvising lyrics that Willie Nelson did not write in that song. He had been reading a lot of William Burroughs, so he’s inserting William Burroughs type imagery from "Naked Lunch" and other kinds of surreal things he’d been reading —stream of consciousness stuff— and as the evening more on, we wanted to keep playing music and Jeffrey wanted to do "Shake, Rattle, and Roll" and I ended up singing lead vocals with him. Jeffrey was just basically singing "Shake, rattle, and roll" over and over, and then I was improvising scat-type jazz and blues singing. I was just drunk enough to kind of make it work a little bit, then Kid was in there for that song and was doing a “ba-ba-ba-ba-baby,” real low, low voice. You can hear him a few times. Recording continued until the group was too imbibed to remember lyrics. After that, we still hadn’t had enough. We did "Bad Moon Rising" which neither Jeffrey or I could remember the lyrics and we were both singing lead vocal on that. And then I think we ran out of tape. "[The Gun Club] stank. Mostly because Jeffrey was so shit-faced he couldn't play. They did a good version of 'Walking With The Beast'. Blixa [Bargeld] is falling down at this point. This kitten went down there, and Jeffrey brought it back for him. But he was thrilled to death when he met him. That really was somebody that he admired." Note 3: "Predictably, the show was awful. Well, we were great; Jeffrey was a mess. He would start on some rant between songs, in the middle of songs, whenever he felt like it. He ended up lying on the stage, on his stomach, blabbering incoherently, like an end-of-days Jim Morrison. I remember looking over, seeing him there with his pants riding down around his ass. We were playing in a big theater and the lighting engineer decided to have some fun at Jeffrey's expense by training the follow spot right on his butt crack. That made the show for me. Note 1: Jeff plays alto sax for most of the set. This is the final date of the tour. During the show their touring van is broken into and all their equipment is stolen. Before the start of the European tour Kid buys a new guiter, a Fender Squier, in London.

Note 2: "My best tale of Jeffrey was, we were in Buffalo, New York, and he decided to buy drugs from somebody… which I might add that all these drugs are what killed him. I am not advocating that in any way. I watched him go downhill until it was painful to watch. But we played Buffalo, at a college or something. And Jeffrey decides to buy some drugs from somebody. So he goes to the van, takes two black guys over to the van, opens up the van – all our stuff is in there – brings out his suitcase, opens his suitcase, takes out a wad of cash, pays the guys for the drugs, puts the wad of cash back in the suitcase, closes the suitcase, puts it in, locks the van and walks away. Now the next thing we hear is somebody comes in screaming, ‘There’s a robbery!’ And they took everything, including all of my wages. We had everything taken. We were supposed to, two days later, be playing in London. We had to get all new passports. This was sort of a Jeffrey thing. That was typical Jeffrey." Note: The band playbacks in the afternoon on the Westdeutschen WerbeFernsehen "Musik Convoy" program. The "Musik Convoy" existed only during 1984-1985. The program's truck used to visit small towns in Nordrhein Westphalen on a Monday, set up on the marketplace and present local and international bands. Moderated by Alan Bangs and Karin Sarholz.
